Every Breath Counts: Baby Leontýnka and Girl Lilly fight lung failure

From the very first breath to the threshold of adulthood. Let’s give little lungs great hope. ❤️ One is only just beginning her life. The other stands on the threshold of adulthood. Nearly sixteen years separate them, but they share something no children should ever have in common – their world is confined by four walls and diseased lungs. For little Leontýnka, we want to provide monitoring equipment that will help her family through the challenging transition from hospital to home care. For Lilly, we want to provide an oxygen concentrator so that her world doesn’t have to end at her front door.

Two devices. Two girls at completely different stages of life. And one shared wish – to be able to breathe.❤️

Leontýnka

Leontýnka came into the world extremely prematurely, at just 23 weeks and 2 days of pregnancy, weighing only 420 grams. Instead of spending their first days together at home, her parents found themselves fighting for their little girl’s life.
No one knew whether her tiny body would be able to cope with challenges it was not yet ready to face. After several days, the doctors even discussed the possibility of palliative care with her parents.

But her mum and dad believed in her.
“We never even considered that option. We believed in her.”

 And Leontýnka chose to fight.

A hospital room instead of a nursery

Leontýnka has been in hospital since the day she was born, with her mother by her side 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The family still does not know when the long-awaited moment will finally come – the day they can take her home.

One of the consequences of her extremely premature birth is bronchopulmonary dysplasia. Leontýnka’s lungs were not sufficiently developed when she was born, which is why she still requires oxygen support. Due to other complications, she undergoes numerous examinations and procedures, and cerebrospinal fluid is drained from her Ommaya reservoir every day.

She is also learning to drink from a bottle, which is extremely exhausting for her. Her mother therefore still has to provide part of her nutrition through a feeding tube directly into her stomach.

Her lungs were not sufficiently developed when she was born. Breathing is therefore much more difficult and tiring for her tiny body than it is for a healthy baby, and she still requires oxygen support.

An oxygen monitor would make caring for Leontýnka easier

Leontýnka’s mother is most worried while her daughter is sleeping, when breathing difficulties can occur. In hospital, Leontýnka is continuously monitored by medical equipment and healthcare professionals. At home, an oxygen monitor would therefore provide the family with invaluable support and reassurance.

Thanks to the Owlet Dream Sock smart sock, Leontýnka’s mother was able to monitor her heart rate and blood oxygen levels. If the sock detects that something is not right, her mother immediately receives an alert through the app on her phone.

“Having monitoring equipment at home would make so many things easier for me. It would ease my fear that something might happen and I wouldn’t notice. At the same time, I would also be able to think about the needs of my older daughter.”Leontýnka’s mum

At home, Leontýnka’s ten-year-old sister Tonička is also waiting for her – and she needs her mother too. The monitor would give the family greater peace of mind when caring for Leontýnka while allowing her mother to devote some of her attention to her older daughter as well.
Leontýnka has already spent long enough fighting for her life in hospital. Now we want to help her take the next step – towards home.

Lilly

Lilly is sixteen years old and will start secondary school in September, where she hopes to train as a chef. She loves singing, is learning to play the guitar, listens to both metal and opera, and above all, she wants what any teenager wants – to spend time with her friends and enjoy being young.

At sixteen, four walls shouldn’t be your whole world

Lilly has experienced health problems since childhood. Further examinations eventually revealed a serious chronic lung condition associated with a mutation in the FLNA gene. Today, her lungs require oxygen support.

She sleeps with oxygen at night and monitors her oxygen saturation during the day. When her levels are low or she is physically active, she needs supplemental oxygen. Even something as simple as going out into the garden can no longer be taken for granted.
“It limits me mainly when it comes to moving around. I can’t do the things I used to do, and I can’t go where I’d like to go. For example, meeting up with friends or going to dance classes. I spend most of my time at home.”
Lilly
Lilly used to dance K-pop, ride her bike, sing and perform. Today, she can no longer dance, cycle, swim or dive. Her illness has also taken away many of the everyday experiences that should be a natural part of being a teenager.

Spontaneously meeting friends. Going to the cinema. Attending a concert. Staying overnight at her grandmother’s house. Spending a weekend with her older sister. Lilly’s mother watches as the illness affects not only her daughter’s body, but her emotional well-being too.
“As her mum, I wish for Lilly to be happy and to truly experience her youth. Her first love, going to the cinema or concerts with friends, or simply meeting up with them whenever she feels like it.”

Oxygen that can travel with the family

Lilly requires long-term oxygen therapy. According to her family, her current oxygen supply lasts approximately three hours, significantly limiting how long she can be away from home.
A Philips Oxygenate 5 oxygen concentrator could help. It draws oxygen from the surrounding air and provides a continuous oxygen flow of 0.5 to 5 litres per minute.

It is a stationary but transportable oxygen concentrator. Lilly cannot carry it with her while walking, but her family can transport it by car – for example, to her grandmother’s or sister’s home, or on a family trip – and plug it into a power supply once they arrive.

Her safe space no longer has to end at her front door.

Little lungs. Great hope. ❤️ Let’s help open the door for them. ❤️
