Post Bellum
The newly established 1st Medical Battalion of Ukraine is a unit that evacuates the wounded and provides qualified medical care on the front line. It was created by expanding the medical service of the 1st International Legion, which we jointly helped equip with two field hospitals last year. The fact that the International Legion's medical service is growing into an independent battalion is a recognition of the professionalism and experience of its members, gained during combat operations in the Kharkiv, Donetsk and Zaporizhia regions. The area of operation of the battalion and the number of paramedics are expanding. Therefore, additional equipment is needed.

During the May mission, we handed over an ambulance, purchased by Slovak donors from Post Bellum SK, and tourniquets from Czech donors, to the newly established 1st Medical Battalion. A paramedic with the call sign Čajka came to Kiev to pick up the car and the equipment. You may remember her from the commemoration event on the third anniversary of the invasion in Old Town Square, when she and Ivan Trojan thanked the participants from the podium and asked us to continue supporting Ukraine. On that occasion, we asked Čajka to describe her story in a few words.
"My name is Jelizaveta, but people know me better by my call sign – Čajka. I am 25 years old. I have been at war for three and a half years.
Although actually – for me personally, the war began in 2014, when the Russians occupied my native Crimea. I studied languages, but on February 24, 2022, I decided that I would not let my home be taken away a second time. That day, I joined the Ukrainian army as a medic and began to take care of the wounded in the defense of Kiev. After Kiev came Kharkov, Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhia.
One day, when there were too few hands and too many wounded, I was asked to help in the field hospital ward. I have been working as a ward nurse for a year now. I got used to the 24/7 carousel, when I am on duty at night, I study and supplement my education in the morning, and I sleep in the afternoon. I feel exhausted and tired, but our soldiers at the front also have no rest and respite.
My friend Vitaly, known to his friends as Ben, was a student at the Polytechnic Faculty. After turning 18, he chose the path of a warrior who would defend his native land with a gun in his hand and joined the army to protect the Donetsk front line. On July 5, 2022, Ben, at the tender age of 22, joined the Pantheon of heroes who protect Ukraine from the sky. He was posthumously awarded the Order of Courage, 3rd degree by President Zelensky. Perhaps that is why I feel that I am exactly where I am supposed to be. I am simply here and trying to save as many lives as possible.”
We are connected with Ukrainians by shared European values. Unlike the Russian aggressors, we value every person and understand that every life matters. Let us please help Čajka and her colleagues fulfill their mission and continue saving lives.

Ukraine is bleeding. We don't have to just passively watch the injustice and aggression our friends are facing because they decided to share our values of freedom and democracy. For more than four years now, we've been buying protective and medical supplies and doing everything we can to get them to Ukraine as quickly as possible and to the places where they're most needed. Thousands of vests and helmets from us are being used by defenders on the front lines, and many tons of medical supplies are saving lives. We also supply fire trucks, ambulances, generators, drones, and optical equipment. The war is still going on. Ukrainian heroes are fighting and still need supplies to defend their country. Please, let us persevere as well. Our own experience with war and totalitarianism in the 20th century compels us to help Ukraine.
In 2019, the non-profit organization Post Bellum established a branch in Lviv with the aim of recording the memories of eyewitnesses for the Memory of Nations archive. Our colleagues in Ukraine have recorded dozens of stories, mainly from the period of Stalinist repression, dissidents, and political prisoners. After the outbreak of the conflict, they asked us for help. We couldn't refuse. Thanks to your support, we have already delivered thousands of bulletproof vests and helmets, tons of medical supplies and observation optics, and, last but not least, fully equipped ambulances and fire trucks to the defenders of Ukraine. Aid to Ukraine has a tangible impact—our collection has demonstrably saved dozens of lives. It also has symbolic significance—the victims of aggression know that they are not alone. All of the resources sent are non-lethal in nature.
All materials needed have been consulted with experts from the Army of the Czech Republic. The recipients of our aid are predominantly frontline fighters, members of special forces units. The assistance is implemented through the Embassy of Ukraine in the Czech Republic. Representatives of the Czech Embassy in Kyiv then oversee the correct use and distribution of the material to those in need.
In cooperation with the Donio portal and, above all, six thousand generous donors, we managed to collect funds for equipment of two field hospitals that play a vital role in saving the lives of wounded soldiers.
Together with the general public, we remind ourselves that the war in Ukraine is still on and that we must not be indifferent. On February 21, 2026, together with the organizations People in Need, Million Moments for democracy and the European Congress of Ukrainians we again organized a rally for the 4th anniversary of the war. The President of the Czech Republic, Petr Pavel, also spoke at the Old Town Square.
During August we have been organizing a commemorative event called "Go Home, Ivan" in the Boris Nemtsov Park with the same organizations. We recall the time when Soviet aggression also affected us. In 2025 the event "Go Home, Ivan" took place on August 21, traditionally in front of the Russian Embassy. The band Rybičky 48 played at the event.
