War is taking away families’ homes, food and safety
Families in Sudan are fleeing attacks and violence. They are leaving behind their homes, food supplies and the work that sustained them. In the places where they seek safety, clean water, healthcare and enough food are often unavailable. Every day, parents face the same questions: what will they feed their children, and where can they turn if one of them becomes ill?
Since April 2023, the armed conflict has escalated into one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises. Attacks are destroying hospitals, water infrastructure and markets. Fighting and blockades are cutting entire communities off from essential supplies and humanitarian assistance.
Mothers skip meals so their children can eat. Families sell their remaining possessions, but rising food prices quickly exhaust what little money they have. Malnutrition weakens the body and increases vulnerability to disease. For a child who needs treatment, another delay can be life-threatening.

War is also taking away people’s ability to earn a living and produce their own food. Farmers cannot safely reach their fields, are losing equipment and struggle to transport their harvests to market. Poor rainfall makes these challenges even greater.
Women continue to farm, trade and organize assistance for their neighbours. CARE supports their work with seeds, tools and practical training. This support helps them grow food for their families and earn an income.
