Every year, millions of animals are killed in slaughterhouses across the Czech Republic. Behind their walls, things happen that are completely at odds with basic humanity: beating, kicking, dragging animals who are unable to walk, gassing, electric stunning, and the subsequent cutting of their throats while their hearts are still beating. The suffering animals endure in slaughterhouses is unimaginable. Yet it is systematically kept hidden from public view. And that is exactly what we must change. What happens in slaughterhouses concerns society as a whole – and society should have the right to see it.
Cameras may record what happens inside slaughterhouses. But what good are recordings that no one will ever see? Under the current system, footage can remain inaccessible to the public, is stored only for a limited period of time, and can only be accessed by the veterinary authorities upon request.
