Little Changemakers

Children in Tanzania are learning how to change the world around them. Sometimes it starts with making something with their hands. Other times, with a conversation about bullying. The regular Changemakers Club meetings give children a safe space – a place where they can create, speak openly and look for their own solutions. And it always begins with one important message: their voice matters. 👉 One meeting for 20 kids costs € 40. Help children take their first steps towards change.

Help children in Tanzania become Changemakers

Children, too, can change the world around them — but they need our support to take the first steps. Through regular Changemakers Club meetings, those first steps become easier.

What happens when children are given space to create, think… and take their own ideas seriously?

Sometimes they make a picture. Sometimes a beaded bracelet. And sometimes, something far more important begins to take shape.

Two stories from one school
At Ilungu Primary School in Tanzania, we experienced two situations in one week that capture exactly what the Changemakers project is about.

Story one: The beads that opened a discussion

The children were threading beads. It was a simple activity – creative, joyful and seemingly harmless. But it soon became clear that it was not just a game.

At a school committee meeting, some parents raised a concern: boys were keeping the bracelets… and some of them wanted to wear them.

In the local context, this is not something that can be taken for granted.

Suddenly, we found ourselves facing a question:

What is “just an activity” – and when does it begin to touch on values?

Together, we looked for an answer. We explained. We listened.

And we asked one of the mothers to help other parents understand why it makes sense not to ban these activities. Because it is not really about the beads. It is about children:

  • trying new things
  • developing their imagination
  • learning not to be afraid of difference

Story two: When children deal with bullying

A few classrooms away, a group of Year 6 pupils were sitting together. Instead of a creative activity, they were given a different task: to think about what bothers them at school.

They chose bullying.

And they did not stop at talking about it. Together, they explored what they could do, what was within their power, and where they should begin.

Then they took that first step.

What do these stories have in common?

Through regular meetings, children gradually develop skills they will carry not only into school, but into the rest of their lives.

They learn to:

  • recognise their own worth and the worth of others
  • notice problems around them
  • experience cooperation
  • look for simple solutions
  • take the first step

How it works

Children meet regularly once a week in the Changemakers Club. The club takes place on school grounds, but outside regular school lessons. Sometimes the children create. Other times they discuss, come up with their own ideas, or simply learn to say what they think out loud.

Traditional classroom teaching rarely creates this kind of space. That is why Bez mámy is using the opportunity to build on its 17 years of cooperation with partner schools in Tanzania. Until now, much of our work has focused on improving school facilities – repairing and building classrooms, wells, toilets and kitchens. Changemakers allows us to extend that support into direct work with children’s personal development.

Every Changemakers Club meeting is a small step towards change in the whole community.

What your donation supports

One meeting costs € 40 :
🎨 Materials and props – €6
🧠 Preparation and facilitation of the meeting – €20
🚶 Transport for the facilitator to the school – €14

Detailed breakdown
Materials and props
These are not needed for every meeting, but they often help children engage more fully. Some materials can be bought at low cost directly in Tanzania, while others need to be brought from the Czech Republic.

Preparation and facilitation
This covers the facilitator’s fee for approximately half a day of intensive preparation and a further full day dedicated to the Changemakers Club meeting. The meeting itself usually lasts 2–3 hours, but due to local transport conditions and the distance to some schools, it is necessary to allow for a full working day.

Transport
Some schools are not accessible by public transport, so more costly motorcycle transport is sometimes needed. Journeys can take a long time, and both the terrain and the weather can make them even more demanding.

What you can make possible

€40 → one meeting a month
€80 → two meetings a month
€160 → a full month of regular meetings
