SOS EARTHQUAKE IN AFGHANISTAN

On 7 October, Afghanistan was struck by a strong earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale. It caused widespread damage and, above all, loss of life. More than 2 000 casualties have been reported and the number is expected to rise in the coming days. Thousands more people are injured. CARE immediately began assessing needs and provided immediate humanitarian assistance.

The earthquake struck Afghanistan at a time when the country was already facing a serious humanitarian crisis and was severely underfunded. Yet the needs continue to grow, especially as winter approaches and a new disaster such as the current natural disaster, which struck less than seven months after another powerful earthquake hit Afghanistan. It left thousands of people homeless and sheltered.

The people of Afghanistan need basic needs such as food, medicine and shelter. In the aftermath of the earthquake, CARE sent its mobile medical clinics to the affected areas and distributed dignity kits and blankets to women and girls affected by the earthquake.
