Building a well for orphans and villagers in Mahanga
Having clean water is what everybody dreams of in the ever-parched Mahango. Orphans living in the Centre have one big rainwater tank, however, it is not enough for the whole year. The thing that would solve their problem of not having enough water for the whole year would be a well. Getting enough clean water would help not only the orphans, but also other inhabitants in Mahango. But before the well can even be drilled it is necessary to do a geotechnical investigation beforehand. We kindly ask you to make a contribution so that the geotechnical investigation can take place (we need 20 000 CZK in total). Then, once we find the right location for the well, The Missionaries of Africa, an international organization, will drill the well itself.
In Mahango the wet season with its intensive rainfalls lasts for a maximum of 4 months. Since 2018 when the rainwater tank was finished, they can store some water in the Orphan Centre, the tank has a capacity of 49 cubic meters. However, this is not enough for the whole year for all 35 inhabitants of the Centre. The stored rainwater also eventually loses its quality and after some time it is better to use it as non-potable water.
In the village itself they do have an old water pipeline, but the quality is very poor. The pipeline often does not work for weeks at a time. This water is used for cleaning, doing laundry, cooking, and even drinking. It is no wonder that the most frequent disease in Mahango is the typhoid.
We have thought of drilling the well for a long time, but we did not have the courage to start such a costly project by ourselves. Thanks to our partner organization The Missionaries of Africa, we have hope now that we can manage to do it. Their contribution will cover all expenses concerning drilling the well. Our financial participation will cover the geotechnical investigation costs of 20 000 CZK.
The well is supposed to help both the inhabitants of the Orphan Centre (children, caretakers, volunteers) and the Mahango villagers. Please help us provide drinking water to those who need it.
