The New Forest is a long-term project launched in 2004. We show how it is possible to transform an almost lifeless spruce desert into a more diverse forest, which will gradually become a new forest again. Our goal is to create a place full of life, where 200-300 year old trees will grow, which are almost impossible to find in ordinary commercial forests. Positive changes on the purchased land can already be seen today. We currently want to expand the New Forest by another 4.6 hectares.
We want to expand the New virgin forest by another 4.6 hectares on the eastern edge of the Ještěd Ridge, in a place called "Pod Liščí skálou". The land is home to trees that are over 130 years old, which will be able to grow here for another 100 to 200 years. The first forest plot we bought 20 years ago looked much worse: It was a young spruce monoculture, broken by snow, damaged by animal gnawing, dark and almost lifeless. It is difficult to imagine a worse forest... Our first step was to cut down some of the spruce trees. This opened up the forest and created space for planting other tree species. This is what it looked like two years after planting the first beech seedlings, which are now growing among the felled spruce trees. With the help of volunteers, we have gradually planted over 80,000 fir, beech, maple, ash, elm, yew, and other tree species here. After a few years, it is already possible to see how the forest is beginning to change. With the help of the wind or birds, seeds from aspens, rowans, birches, and various shrubs and herbs also reach new places. And this is our goal. A place where a new generation thrives alongside forest giants, a place that nature has reclaimed. A place where people don't go with saws, but only with humility toward old trees and nature. A place that will become a natural temple - the New virgin forest.
