I am concerned about our care of the natural world and lives connected to it. This is why I chose to support grassroots movement Limity jsme my in its effort to organize the first Czech climate camp. I work as a software developer and I like to run. For this campaign, I offer my legs. I’m going to run from the edge of Vršany mining site, through the town of Most, near demolished Libkovice, stop at vibrant Horní Jiřetín and finish at the castle Jezeří. During my journey, I will stop at interesting places where I’ll talk with locals about interesting facts and peculiarities of life in the mining region in northern Bohemia. I would love if you were to join me anywhere along the track.

Come to Klimakemp, which will take place in Horní Jiřetín on 21–25 June 2017. There will be debates, workshops, performances and protests against mining and burning of coal. During those five days, we wil live in jointly governed camp run on principles of sustainability and there will be enough space for creative, bold and non-violent actions.

Yesterday, well regarded Czech weekly magazine Respekt wrote an article mentioning Klimakemp organized by grassroots movement Limity jsme my. It also mentioned my run trying to show peculiarities of life close to opencast mines, dealing with it and looking into the future after coal. It should be noted this run is actually this campaign trying to raise money for Klimakemp.

The article is in Czech and you must either buy that issue or be a subscriber to read it whole. Nevertheless, the main topic is an unwillingness of the Czech Republic to ratify Paris Agreement and very neglectful approach to introduction of renewable source of energy. It finishes with prickly yet accurate comment by Czech MEP Luďek Niedermayer (EPP): “We still don’t understand that energetics isn’t about one big state enterprise. This is the reason, why we’re missing the boat a little bit.” Decentralization and democratization of energetics and other topics touched by the article will be cover in greater detail during the camp. For example in a debate with representatives from municipalities which have taken to the road of energetic independence.

We have finished – again, we. In the morning, the five of us drove from Prague towards the town of Most. At the same time, we had a number of people who stayed behind and told us what were doing wrong 😞 To have such group of people behind my back was freeing and obliging at the same time – especially for a loner like myself.
Our team with Radek and Marek from Horní Jiřetín near Jezeří castle.

I have estimated time spend on each segments quite accurately. Introduction of each place, events connected with them and especially interviews needed more time – at least the way I did it. I started at 13:20 and the last livestream from Jezeří started at 20:20 with the sun already behind mountain range of Krušné hory (Ore Mountains).

Every stop and each interview has been a great lesson and only deepened my humility towards the region and its communities. The concentration of issues and difficulties of region so rich in natural resources is probably great everywhere in the world. Nevertheless, through this experience, I have only hardened my need not to resign, to help people or become one myself who have vision of society where people appreciate each other and where they don’t have to fulfill their needs on the expense of their own future or lives of others. Klimakemp is an event held by exactly this kind of people – grassroots movement Limity jsme my. Come to it or donate so that we can cover all the necessities humans can have during such actions.

Recordings of lifestreams can be found on Facebook page of the movement under the videos tab.

Uhlí a další fosilní paliva musí zůstat pod zemí. Po celém světě proto sílí hnutí za klimatickou spravedlnost. Je na čase, abychom dobu uhelnou ukončili i v České republice. Podpořte nás. Limity jsme my.
Klimatická krize je tady. Posledních pět let bylo nejteplejších v celé historii měření a po celém světě sledujeme první příznaky klimatického rovzratu: sucha a záplavy, požáry a bouře, stoupající ceny potravin. Jednou z hlavních příčin je spalování fosilních paliv: uhlí, ropy a plynu. Chceme-li odvrátit katastrofální dopady změn klimatu, musí nejméně 80 % jejich zásob zůstat pod zemí. Fosilní průmysl je ale nadále plánuje vytěžit. A to mu nemůžeme dovolit.

Před dvěma lety vláda prolomila limity na dole Bílina a umožnila ČEZu spálit další miliony tun hnědého uhlí. Zastaralé uhelné elektrárny ničí zdraví lidí v severních Čechách a zkracují jejich životy. Naši politici příčiny změn klimatu neřeší a nadále upřednostňují zájmy uhlobaronů před zájmem celé společnosti.

Limity jsme my.
