Colors are the beginning, safe streets are the goal
Help us create vibrant cities where children can move safely and people enjoy meeting each other.
With this fundraising campaign, we want to support further street transformations, especially around schools. We turn places that currently serve mostly cars into spaces for life, play, and community. Every donation helps make so-called tactical urbanism a normal part of urban planning in Czech cities — bringing safety and joy not only to children but also to parents and passers-by. Because even a small change can have a huge impact.
We call this year at Pěšky mestem “The Year We Made It”. In cooperation with schools, city districts, artists and experts, we have completed three projects that have transformed the surroundings of Prague schools into places where children and parents feel safe and pleasant. Tactical urbanism is only just gaining ground here – we are testing it in practice and in legislation and are looking for supporters and partners for change.
What is tactical urbanism?
Quick, low-cost and temporary modifications to public space that help cities function safer and friendlier with immediate effect.
Using colours, furniture, greenery and small interventions, we can transform a grey and dangerous place into a lively and safe environment for people.
When temporary changes prove successful, they pave the way for permanent modifications – planted trees or widened sidewalks with a paved surface.
Pěšky mestem thus blazes new trails – literally and figuratively. But without your support, we will hardly be able to continue. Support us, please.

Grafická Elementary School – “This is Vienna, Copenhagen or Barcelona, right?” That's how people reacted to the photos of the transformed street in front of ZŠ Grafická… But no, it's really Prague! What started with a complaint about an overflowing trash can and illegal parking ended up as a colorful project with asphalt art and street furniture, which turned several parking spaces into a safe and pleasant square for children and parents. “The feedback is very positive. The forecourt has contributed to a nice start to the day, when children and parents gather here. It is time to say hello and chat. Time has slowed down here. Even after school, children are not in a hurry, and they still play and chat for a while. I have very positive feedback from parents, but surprisingly also from some neighbors. And I myself, when I go home in the early evening, I always meet someone in the forecourt. Students on a picnic, a mother with a little girl or a gentleman with a dog. I feel a sense of belonging to our school, to our neighborhood, to the people. And that makes me very happy,” says school principal Radmila Jedličková.
Mikoláše Alše Elementary School – When the Mayor Has the Courage In front of the school, cars used to drive too fast and there were no crossings. Thanks to the initiative of the parents, the school joined the Safe Routes to School program. Thanks to our surveys and analyses, a design was created and the construction of the space followed. The students' designs resulted in asphalt art, the creation of which involved over 150 people. "The renovation makes sense, traffic is better organized, and asphalt art is a wonderful idea," says Mayor Petr Hejl, who actively supported the project and helped to quickly implement it. The place where children used to run between cars is now a safe space full of color and life.
Jarov Elementary School - Initiative from the Bottom The change here was the initiative of parents, who themselves mapped out dangerous places around the school. The children then drew their ideas for a safer and more playful street - and their designs became the basis of the project. This created a space for free movement, play, and meeting children and neighbors that is friendlier for everyone. "You can see how the space has come to life. Everyone stops, children race, jump, explore, and parents discuss," says Mrs. Martina, mother of two students from Jarov Elementary School.
