Two neighbouring schools - Jakaya Secondary School and Mkola Primary School - share not only the same space but also the same problem. Water is scarce here and without it, it is impossible to provide basic sanitation or regular cooking for the children. The savannah landscape is arid and water is hidden very deep, often up to 100 metres underground. Help us make this challenging project a reality - a shared well will change the lives of 2,000 pupils!
Two schools, one goal: quality water
Jakaya Secondary School (900 students) and Mkola Primary School (1000 students) stand side by side in a poor rural area of Usangu. Education is a chance for a better life for the local children, but the lack of water makes it harder for them to get that chance every day.
Without water, it is impossible to provide quality drinking water, and children often suffer from typhoid fever and high absence from school. It is not easy to cook a school lunch and it is almost impossible to wash hands after using the toilet, let alone flush the toilet.
Today, both schools rely on rainwater or water from the municipal water supply, but it flows very sporadically and its water is also murky. In the background, a small tank (1500 l) for touchless washing during a pandemic. The tank has no inlet, it has to be filled manually. This method is inadequate for normal school operations.
Target for 2026: Well and reservoirs
Terrain survey, borehole permit - 800 EUR
Drilling of a well (up to 100 m deep) - 5 200 EUR
Pump (German quality) - 800 EUR
2 large-capacity tanks - 2 000 EUR
construction of a tower under the reservoir - local participation
Target for 2027: Water distribution to toilets and kitchen
In 2027 we plan to continue the project by building water distribution lines from the well to the water points in both schools.
Water distribution to both schools - up to 1.5 km of pipes in total - 2 800 EUR
4 water points - concrete surface and taps at toilets and kitchens - 2 000 EUR
Teaching pupils and teachers about hygiene, disease prevention and well maintenance - 600 EUR
➡️ Total cost (for 2027): 5 400 EUR Drilling rig at Gwili School in January 2025, an even bigger machine will be needed at Mkola and Jakaya.
Bez mámy - a guarantee of transformation
We have been helping in Tanzania since 2006. In this time, we support over 20 schools, improving their learning facilities and leading them to take responsibility for school development through the "Help for schools " project, of which both schools are part. We see water as an essential prerequisite for any further development.
Our projects are based on personal visits, regular monitoring and cooperation with the local community. In the case of the Jakaya and Mkola schools, the local people have already pledged their own involvement in the construction of the surrounding infrastructure (towers for the reservoir, and later the digging of pipelines).
Your support makes a difference
