Just last year, we witnessed several cases where representatives of Prague’s local governments misused otherwise necessary tools for preventing extremism to selectively monitor independent civic initiatives. Cultural institutions and associations have the right to create space for diverse voices and perspectives, as long as they operate within legal boundaries. Freedom of expression is not just an individual right—it is a cornerstone of a democratic society. We will not remain silent in the face of discrimination, censorship, and abuse of power. And neither should you.

The current developments deeply concern us and raise fears for the future. We refuse to stand idly by as political institutions unjustly interfere with our rights and freedoms. Right now, we can actively observe this happening, for example, in the USA or in neighboring countries like Germany and Slovakia. Who gets to decide what is still acceptable and what is not? How do we prevent opinions from being silenced under the pretext of protecting certain interests in favor of a political agenda? Decisions about public funding for culture must be based on principles of transparency and impartiality. Any abuse of power to suppress critical voices doesn’t just threaten art—it endangers the very essence of our freedom.
