Supporting independent culture protects the democratic values of all of us.
SVĚTOVA 1 is a nonprofit arts space that actively defends independent artistic expression and the associated social and human rights. Our program features exhibitions, lectures, festivals, and workshops focused on emerging artists, queer themes, and social issues.
Over the past eight years, we have carried out dozens of projects on masculinity, ecology, women’s rights, ethnic minorities, and marginalized groups. In 2022, we opened our doors to families fleeing the russian invasion of Ukraine. We are part of Prague’s cultural infrastructure and active within the Czech independent arts scene.
We are currently in a crisis situation. SVĚTOVA 1 and many other cultural, environmental, and human rights projects are facing attacks from the new government coalition, whose representatives repeatedly question the value of queer culture, gender equality, and the independent civil sector.
Since 2024, we have witnessed cases where representatives of Prague’s local governments have abused tools for preventing extremism to selectively monitor independent civic initiatives. Freedom of expression is not merely an individual right—it is a key pillar of a democratic society. We will not remain silent in the face of discrimination, censorship, and abuse of power. And neither should you.
Independent culture in the Czech Republic is entering an uncertain period. And we are right in the line of fire.
