Panleukopenia has reared its ugly head once again, in the most unexpected of ways. Symptoms appeared unexpectedly in two fully vaccinated cats. These cats had already passed quarantine, had already been cleared medically, and were considered fully protected from the disease. All quarantine procedures were followed - including our routine disinfection with Virkon S (medical grade disinfectant which is supposed to kill the panleuk virus), shoe cover changes, and separation between cats in quarantine, and cats that have been vaccinated and are past quarantine. There was no contact between unvaccinated/quarantined cats and these cats. There is no reason they should have developed the illness via typical infection routes. It took multiple tests to confirm, but in the end it was determined to be panleuk.
Soon following the breakthrough cases, some of the unvaccinated cats showed symptoms. In total, 8 cats have been hospitalized, including the two vaccinated breakthrough cases. So far, four lives have been lost. In addition to the typical panleuk symptoms, atypical symptoms of cysts and abrasions have appeared - though so far those symptoms have been manageable. Out of precaution because of the breakthrough cases (all associated with one specific vaccine which is the brand our vets use) additional precautions have been taken including testing and supportive care for all healthy/vaccinated cats to ensure no more breakthrough cases pop up.
Beyond the immeasurable grief, the total hospital bills so far reach 46,000 czk. We have paid 32k of the bill so far, which has already put a massive dent in our funds. With more animals in hospital still for this specific issue + the routine vet bills for the other animals the total vet bill will continue to grow.
We have started this fundraiser to help us keep up with the ongoing vet bills. Any donation would be much appreciated, and would help immensely towards clearing the bills as new ones arise with the continued hospitalizations.
We are sending our heartfelt thanks to the entire Cool Critters family for the support and love you show, that love is what gets us through these tough times.
