Build a clinic in Uganda. Let's give children hope for life!

Czech doctors and architects are building a children's clinic that will provide care for sickle cell anemia patients. The SSUUBO organization has already raised an incredible 2 million of the 2.89 million Czech crowns needed. They are currently in the final stages of the collection, which will provide a fuller and longer life for hundreds of children each year.

This campaign is already closed. Thank you!

Thanks to you, we made it possible, thank you from the bottom of our hearts!

On September 15, 2025, after only 14 days since the launch, our collection reached 100% of the required amount. With humility and commitment, we are slowly starting to pack our bags and will soon be heading to Uganda to build a clinic for children with sickle cell anemia. Thank you very much.

However, we are leaving the collection open until the planned November 17, 2025. We will have the buildings, and we are going to implement them, we will use all other collected funds next year to equip our newly built clinic. There is still a lot we will be buying, from basic furniture to expensive laboratory equipment.

So let's go and equip the new clinic, thank you for every donation 💙

What is sickle cell anemia?

Sickle cell anemia is a congenital disorder of red blood cells. Healthy blood cells are round and flexible, which allows them to carry oxygen to the tissues. In sickle cell anemia, the blood cells become rigid, hard, and have a shorter lifespan, leading to permanent anemia. Sickle cells can become stuck in small blood vessels, blocking blood flow and oxygen supply. This causes pain and gradual damage to organs, especially the spleen, which loses function in the first year of life. The most serious complication is stroke, the consequences of which are the same as in adults. In Uganda, more than 25,000 children are born each year with a treatable genetic disease. 60-80% of them do not live to see their fifth birthday – that’s about 16,000 children a year. For the majority, these are years spent in repeated pain. Yet with modern medicine, we can give them a full life.

Who will we help?

The story of Serinah, who is now part of SSUUBO

On her twelfth birthday, she took her favorite toy in her arms and went to bed. She was waiting for the end. That's what they told her when she was little - that she would not live to be old. Thanks to timely medical care, Serinah is alive. Today, she helps the organization with psychological support for children and is an inspiration to them that a diagnosis is not an obstacle to an active life.

SSUUBO Organization

Professor MUDr. Zdeněk Ráčil, Ph.D., a renowned Czech hematologist with more than 20 years of experience, changed his career in 2020. When he saw children suffering from this disease in Uganda, he decided to devote his knowledge and time to those who need it most.

Today, SSUUBO cares for more than 450 young patients. The clinic is the only specialized sickle cell anemia clinic in Uganda that provides comprehensive care, including preventive examinations that can prevent stroke. The volunteer Czech team works hand in hand with local staff who are trained and provide excellent care to the children. Now they want to build a new clinic where they will be able to diagnose and treat even faster and more effectively.

What exactly will the money from this collection be used for?

Czech architects from the luni studio designed the clinic as a donation

The Czech architectural studio luni also participated in the project. “We ourselves try to support charitable projects on a personal level for a long time, so cooperation with SSUUBO makes a lot of sense for us,” explains Nina Ratočka Pevná, co-founder of the studio.

The architects created a design that respects local materials, technologies and Ugandan traditions. Four pavilions with a central atrium – a public space for spending time and children playing – were created with a view to the fragile construction budget based on Czech donors.

"We tried to bring something unique to the design, but at the same time it was key that patients and their families feel comfortable at the clinic. At the same time, due to the limited budget, we had to keep our feet firmly on the ground. The space will offer comprehensive laboratories, rehabilitation rooms, a workplace for psychologists, and an intensive care unit. We believe that we will be able to build the clinic in its full scope," adds Lukáš Janout, co-founder of luni.

The new clinic will have five specialized workplaces:

🏥 Doctor's offices and ultrasound examination rooms
🚨 EMERGENCY with 10 beds for patients with acute complications
🔬 Laboratory for diagnostics from blood samples
🏃 Rehabilitation for children with consequences after a stroke
🧠 Psychologist's workplace for mental support, especially for adolescents

"In April 2025, we purchased land through our subsidiary non-profit company SSUUBO Organization Uganda, on which preparatory work is already underway. We plan to start construction in October 2025. The clinic will open in March 2026 - if we complete the collection by October 31," adds Martin Židlík, co-founder of the SSUUBO Foundation.

"Money for which you wouldn't even build a gatehouse in the Czech Republic," as Lucie Výborná said in an interview with Prof. Ráčil on Czech Radio.

“Ssuubi” means HOPE

Even a small step can have a big impact. SSUUBO has been operating for five years in the temporary premises of the John Paul II Clinic in Buikwe and the rooms are no longer enough. Let’s give children with sickle cell disease hope for a longer and better life together.
