Martin Povejšil, a prominent Czech diplomat, dedicated his professional life to promoting democratic values. To honour his legacy, his family has therefore decided to set up a memorial fund to help those who are now fighting relentlessly for freedom and independence. Our friends in Ukraine, even a year and a half after the Russian invasion, still need protective and medical supplies, which the non-profit organisation Post Bellum is sending to the places where they are currently needed most. Please donate any amount you can to support them.
Martin Povejšil made a major contribution to Czech diplomacy. Having joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1990, he worked tirelessly for the Czech Republic and its anchorage among free democratic Western countries. He served as ambassador to Chile, Spain and Andorra. He was present at key moments in the Czech Republic's modern history – at the time of the country’s accession to the EU, he was Director General of the European Section of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and later became the Czech Permanent Representative to the EU. He was also the Czech Ambassador to NATO. From 2018 to the present, he served as Director General of the Security and Multilateral Section and was instrumental in establishing the government's new security strategy. Martin Povejšil was a recipient of the Medal of Merit for Diplomacy and the National Security Council Award.

POST BELLUM
Ukraine is bleeding. We do not want to just passively watch the injustice and aggression our friends face because they choose to share the values of freedom and democracy with us. For almost three years now, we have been buying protective and medical equipment and taking it to Ukraine as quickly as possible and where it is most needed. Vests and helmets from us are used by defenders on the front line, many tons of medical equipment save lives. We have supplied fire and ambulance vehicles, drones or optical equipment. Ukraine is facing a second winter of war. The Russian aggressor is targeting the energy infrastructure and more than 70% of Ukraine's thermal production capacities are either occupied or damaged. Defense forces, hospitals and the civilian population may face power outages. Let´s give give warmth and light to Ukraine.

The important things do not change with the times. Whether it’s the stories from the times we ourselves faced war and totalitarianism or the ones happening right now just a few hundred kilometres away from us, they are connected by the longing for freedom, safety, and one’s home. Our own experience with war and totalitarianism in the 20th century makes us obligated to help others.

In 2019, the non-profit organisation Post Bellum set up an office in Lviv with the goal of filming the witness accounts for the Paměť národa archive. Our colleagues in Ukraine recorded dozens of stories mostly from survivors of Stalinist repressions, dissidents, and political prisoners. After the outbreak of the war, they asked for our help. We could not decline. Thanks to your support, we have supplied the defenders of Ukraine with thousands of bulletproof vests and helmets, tonnes of medical equipment and optical devices as well as fully equipped ambulances and fire trucks. Dozens of human lives have verifiably been saved thanks to this. All the aid provided has been non-lethal in nature.

All materials needed have been consulted with experts from the Army of the Czech Republic. The recipients of our aid are predominantly frontline fighters, members of special forces units. The assistance is implemented through the Embassy of Ukraine in the Czech Republic. Representatives of the Czech Embassy in Kyiv then oversee the correct use and distribution of the material to those in need.

In cooperation with the Donio portal and, above all, six thousand generous donors, we managed to collect funds for equipment of two field hospitals that play a vital role in saving the lives of wounded soldiers. We have been delivering the material on an ongoing basis and the vast majority are already serving in hospitals. The remaining material will be delivered by the end of the year.
Together with the general public, we remind ourselves that the war in Ukraine is still on and that we must not be indifferent. On February 24, 2024, together with the organizations People in Need, Million Moments for democracy and the European Congress of Ukrainians we organized a rally for the 2nd anniversary of the war. The President of the Czech Republic, Petr Pavel, also spoke at the Old Town Square.

On the evening of August 20, 2024, together with the NGO´s mentioned above, we organized a commemorative event called "Go home, Ivan" in Boris Němcov's park. We remembered the time when we, Czechia, faced Soviet aggression too.
